Student Hosted Day / Overnight Visits

The Day at State program gives high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to experience life at Michigan State University for a day or overnight visit. These visits, hosted by currently enrolled students, often include attending classes, eating in the residence halls, visiting the bookstore, attending student group meetings, and seeing a residence hall room. Students on overnight visits spend the night in their student host’s residence hall room.

Day at State visitors can make reservations to visit campus on select weeks during the fall and spring semesters. (Summer programs are not available.)

February 2 - April 17, 2009 (no visits March 9-13)

  • Overnight visits: Monday-Thursday from 4 p.m. until 4 p.m. (EST) the following day.

Day at State Student Hosts

Prospective students are paired with a currently enrolled student host. Participants interested in a multicultural visitation experience may request a student host of the same or different ethnicity, if available. When possible, Day at State staff match participants with student hosts who share the same major interest; however, this is only if a host student of the same major is available.

Reservations and Fees

Reservations must be made a minimum of two weeks in advance. Space fills quickly and students are matched with host students on a first-come, first-served basis. Certain dates (high school spring breaks and President’s Day) are popular and space availability is not guaranteed. Please do not schedule a visit unless you are certain you can attend.

A non-refundable $15 processing fee is required and reservations can only be made online. (Students wishing to change an existing reservation must cancel their visit, complete another online reservation form, and pay another non-refundable $15 processing fee. Please note that the $15 processing fee is not refundable or transferable under any circumstances.)

Special needs or requests may be indicated on the online reservation form or by calling the Day at State Office at (517) 353-1615. Special arrangements must be made in advance through the Day at State Office out of respect to the volunteer student hosts.

Parents, Family Members, and Friends

Due to the nature of the Day at State program parents, family members, and additional guests are not able to participate. If family members accompany Day at State participants to East Lansing, they are responsible for their activities during the day and accommodations. Admission presentations and campus tours are available, and MSU has several areas of interest for visitors.

If another high school student would like to participate in the Day at State Program, he/she must complete the online reservation, submit the non-refundable $15 processing fee, and indicate on the reservation that they would like to be paired with a student with an existing reservation.
